MOMENTS

Several times I joined the art group to do "sidewalk" charcoal sketches! Very good practice that I recommend if you yearn to paint portraits! You learn to quickly assess the individual and nail down the likeness quickly as you can. At Glendale Mall in Indianapolis I hauled home Big Bucks...two dollars a sketch!*L* (Price of a gallon of gasoline today...) It was a fascinating experience, adrenalin rush to be sure! (Adrenalin rush? Not even a drop in the bucket when compared to becoming a Mommy! Sweet exchange - Frank 1968 - Laura 1970.)

Photograph of my first commissioned Oil painting.
I set up this still life and lit the antique kerosene lamp. Sure didn't know what I was doing, but did it anyway. This would be a gift for a friend's sister, in remembrance of their father. The pressure was on! But with the best of my ability at the time, I painted what I saw! (Or thought I saw.)

This pastel, Still Life with Fruit and Antiques, won Best of Show, Amateur Division, Indiana State Fair Art Exhibition ten years later. So I listened to my heart (and a couple art instructors), and took the big step to Professional Division.

My first Nugget after taking the giant step that same
year. Best of Show - Northern Indiana Regional Exhibition. All four of us were there to receive the award! Frank was seven and Laura, five. We squealed! And Ken smiled.

Two years later, Third Place Award, Professional Division, Indiana State Fair. In 1983, we attended a Portrait Seminar in Chicago and this painting received a wonderful critique by John Howard Sanden, Nationally known portrait artist and author. I didn't hear a thing but my knees knocking! Ken had the presence of mind to record his comments for me to keep.
Are you still with me? When you selected "Moments" in this section, bet you didn't expect to spend "hours" here! There are just so many stories to tell - one in each painting! Too many wonderful people connected to my artwork. And after many years, some of us meet again through this website...their little kidlets now grown tall!
But if you can spare just one more teeny, tiny little MOMENT
I have something
The Most Cherished Nugget Imaginable!
